Cases
latest first- Limerick construction worker given suspended sentence over €24,752 in fraudulent social welfare claims Fraud (fraudulent social welfare claims) · Co. Limerick
Sean Browne, a male construction worker with an address in Meelick, County Clare, fraudulently claimed €24,752.18 in social welfare benefits between 1 October 2016 and 10 September 2019 by making five false declarations about his employment status while working at a site in Limerick. The Department of Social Protection uncovered the claims. Limerick District Court heard the case before Judge John King, who described the offence as a defrauding of the people of Ireland. In September 2025 Mr Browne was sentenced to five months in prison, suspended for two years, with the judge noting he would otherwise have faced custody because he had been making repayments. The latest reported position is that he still owes over €16,000.
