Sean Breen, 30, of Derry, was charged with assault causing harm after punching Damian McFadden with his left hand to the face outside the Atlantic Bar on Main Street, Buncrana, on 9 August 2019, leaving the victim with a serious head injury. Breen was identified from CCTV footage, arrested, and admitted to the assault, which followed a disagreement over a person both men knew. He pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court in June 2024, and the case was heard at Donegal Circuit Court in December 2024, where Judge John Aylmer adjourned sentencing for one year to allow him to raise €5,000 for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland. In December 2025, Breen was sentenced to a suspended two-and-a-half-year term after making the payment. The court noted that McFadden died in 2022, with no suggestion this was linked to the injuries.
