latest first- Victim of 2015 Newcastle West attack challenges exclusion from State compensation scheme Assault · Co. Limerick
In August 2015 Sean Ambrose, a Limerick man, suffered severe head injuries, including brain trauma, in an unprovoked attack after leaving a pub in Newcastle West, Co Limerick. The assailant, whose name and nationality are not given, received an eight-year custodial sentence, though the sources do not give the date. Ambrose made an initial claim under the State Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal scheme in 2017, and in 2022 the tribunal held that he had failed to engage with it and refused to let him appeal. In October 2023 Ambrose brought judicial review proceedings claiming the tribunal wrongly held it could not assess his claim, and Ms Justice Niamh Hyland granted him permission to bring the challenge ex parte; the case returns before the court in November.
