A 13-year-old boy was raped in a school bathroom at a secondary school in Co Offaly on a date between August 1998 and December 1999 by Seamus O'Callaghan, then aged 53, who was a teacher there. The victim made a complaint to gardaí in 2021, and O'Callaghan was interviewed voluntarily in July 2022, denying the allegation. He was convicted of one count of anal rape following a Central Criminal Court trial in May 2026. On 13 July 2026, Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo sentenced the 82-year-old retired Franciscan brother to 11 years, reduced from a headline 13 years for his age, medical issues and personal circumstances.
