  • Supreme Court dismisses appeal in 1976 Dundalk murder Murder · Co. Louth

Seamus Ludlow, a 47-year-old forestry worker from Dundalk, Co Louth, was shot after leaving a bar in May 1976, and his body was found in a lane near his home. The Garda investigation was closed within three weeks, and the RUC identified suspects north of the border in 1979. Four men were arrested in 1998 and questioned at Castlereagh but released without charge, and the DPPs on both sides of the border recommended no prosecutions. In September 2021, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by Thomas Fox, Ludlow's nephew, to compel the State to establish an inquiry into the handling of the investigation. The 50th anniversary of the murder was marked in May 2026, and Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú raised the case in the Dáil in June 2026.
