  Scott Joyce, 20, pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to a 21-year-old man in St Mary's Park, Limerick city, on 23 March 2024. The victim was struck over 20 times with hammers in a front garden, suffering a fractured skull, and two men had bought the hammers in a hardware store beforehand. Mr Joyce was first remanded in custody in April 2024. Judge Daly described the attack as “sheer brutality” and, as reported on 10 November 2025, imposed a four-year jail sentence with the last 12 months suspended, backdated to April.
