On 7 March 2020, Scott Carthy, a 19-year-old man from Dundalk, was driving a BMW erratically at high speed in north Louth when Dromad Gardaí attempted to stop him. The BMW failed to stop and crashed into a barrier, after which Carthy fled on foot and was arrested following a foot pursuit. He was charged with dangerous driving and driving without insurance or a licence, and the case was heard at Dundalk District Court. In September 2021, the dangerous driving charge was reduced to careless driving with no Gardaí objection, and Judge Eirinn McKiernan fined him €300 and did not disqualify him from driving.
