Tom O'Gorman, 39, a journalist and researcher with the Iona Institute, was stabbed to death at his home on Beechpark Avenue, Castleknock, Dublin, in the early hours of 12 January 2014 after a row over a game of chess. Saverio Bellante, 43, an Italian national from Palermo diagnosed with schizophrenia, was suffering delusions that he was God and on a special mission against the forces of evil at the time of the killing. Bellante was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in July 2015 and has been detained at the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum since. In July 2022, an inquest at Dublin District Coroner's Court heard forensic psychiatric and post-mortem evidence, and a jury returned a narrative verdict.
