  On 10 October 2025 a woman was accused of assaulting a female security staff member at Laois Shopping Centre in Portlaoise, causing bruising and tenderness to both knees, and was reported to be abusing alcohol at the time. Sarah Cloherty, 39, of No Fixed Abode, appeared before Portlaoise District Court on 24 September 2026 accused of assault causing harm, where her solicitor said she was pleading guilty, though a Garda said she replied not guilty when arrested.   Sarah Cloherty, a 38-year-old woman of Mullingar, Co Westmeath, was accused of being intoxicated and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at JFL Avenue, Portlaoise, on 27 June 2025, and was charged with public order offences. She had been jailed for two months on the Monday before her hearing and was then granted temporary release. When she appeared at Portlaoise District Court on the Thursday, counsel said a guilty plea had been entered and legal aid was granted, and Judge Andrew Cody warned she could face another 24 hours in bed and breakfast at the State's expense unless she showed evidence of change. She is due before Tullamore District Court on 25 July on other charges.
