Samy Taib, a 22-year-old man, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm and one count of coercive control relating to his former partner, a woman, at addresses in Dublin between May 2018 and June 2019, during which he punched, choked, and hit her with his car, driving over her right leg and causing permanent damage to her foot. He also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing endangerment and driving without a licence or insurance after leading gardaí on a 20-minute high-speed chase on 13 October 2019. Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced him at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in January 2023 to a total of five years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended for two years on strict conditions, and disqualified him from driving for six years. Taib is now appealing the length of his sentence to the Court of Appeal, which reserved its judgment in February 2024.
