In November 2019, a 66-year-old Irish woman met a man calling himself Neil Turner on the Plenty of Fish dating site and, over six months, transferred just over €254,000 in ten payments to the fake profile. The fraudsters also sent her to Dubai in 2019, where she was shown a bundle of cash said to be $3.25 million and asked for $650,000 to release the funds. Gardaí attached to the National Economic Crime Bureau linked the profile to three Nigerian men living in Ireland and arrested them. Omowale Owolabi, 31, pleaded guilty to theft; Raak Sami Sadu, 32, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud; and Samson Ajayi, 33, pleaded guilty to three money laundering charges. On 28 July 2022, Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Owolabi to three years and three months, Sadu to three years, and Ajayi to two and a half years in prison.
