In the early hours of 5 December 2018, Oisín O'Laoi, a 22-year-old man, went to the home of Sally Wallace in Carraroe, Galway, where he banged on the door, demanded her son come out, and swiped a knife under her chin before burying it in the front door. He was on bail at the time and had known the victim for many years as a friend of her son. He pleaded guilty in February 2022 to a single count of production of an article capable of inflicting serious injury after a jury had been sworn in for trial at Galway Circuit Court. In May 2022, the judge set his sentence at three and a half years in prison, deferred to November for finalisation.
