  Slawomir Gierlowski, a 41-year-old Polish man, was convicted by a jury of assault causing harm, false imprisonment and production of an article over an attack on Ruth Maxwell at Ballymount Park in Dublin on 30 May 2011, when he followed her into the courtyard of her apartment block, pushed her to the ground, choked her and attempted to rape her. He was sentenced to a further six years in October 2022, bringing his total prison term to 34 and a half years, and ordered to be deported from Ireland on his release. Gierlowski, who maintains his innocence, lodged an appeal against the conviction. The Court of Appeal heard his challenge in December 2025, with his legal team arguing that DNA evidence from a cigarette packet should not have been admitted, and reserved its judgment.
