Martin Dunne, 38, of Portlaoise, was sentenced in April 2023 for assaulting Garda Roy Cooper and failing to provide a specimen at Portlaoise Garda Station on 25 November 2022. Gardaí stopped him for driving without lights on; he then refused to provide a specimen and pushed the garda against a wall, causing very minor soft tissue injuries. He admitted both offences and was fined €300, disqualified from driving for four years (postponed until July 1), and directed to donate €1,000 to the garda benevolent fund. He had 12 previous convictions, the most recent from 2009, and his solicitor said he had written an apology letter to Garda Cooper.
