Ronan Mahon, 23, of Crinkle, Birr, Offaly, was charged with two counts of dangerous driving after driving at 100kph on a narrow 80kph road while fleeing a Garda checkpoint, with no insurance on his vehicle. He appeared at Tullamore District Court in January 2023, where his solicitor Donal Farrelly said he was pleading guilty and asked for the charges to be reduced to careless driving. Judge Andrew Cody adjourned the case to 20 March 2023, saying he would consider reducing the charges and not disqualifying Mahon if he paid €2,500 to the Court Poor Box. Mahon drives silage tractors and trailers for farmers and would lose his job if his licence were taken.
