On 21 December 2021, Ronan Courtney, 29, was arrested for his own safety after being reported in a very intoxicated state at Market Square, Portlaoise, where he shouted obscenities at gardaí, and later urinated on the cell floor at Portlaoise Garda Station. He was charged with criminal damage at the station and with intoxication and threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour at Market Square. At Portlaoise District Court, Judge Catherine Staines applied the Probation Act, Section 1(2), after hearing mitigation including letters of apology, a change in medication, and mental health difficulties.
