Roman German, a 41-year-old man with an address in Lithuania, was caught by a customs officer at Dublin Port on 6 December 2022 with a bag containing €420,405 in cash. Gardaí told the court that he flew into the country on 5 December, collected the cash from a security deposit box facility in Dublin 4 the day after, and was caught after a sniffer dog alerted to his bag. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to money laundering, and the defence said he was a courier paid €200 and not the owner or beneficiary of the money. On 19 December 2023 Judge Elma Sheahan jailed him for 18 months, backdated to when he first went into custody in December 2022.
