Michael Welby, 24, of Loughgannon, Roscahill, was driving a car with defective tyres at twice the speed limit after drinking at two pubs when he lost control on a country road at Porridgetown, Oughterard, Co Galway, shortly after 1am on 1 March 2020. The car flipped and struck a bank of trees and a wall 40 metres away, killing 16-year-old Róisín Hession, who had been a passenger. Welby pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death at Galway Circuit Court in March 2022 and was sentenced in July 2022 to three years with 18 months suspended. The State appealed, and the Court of Appeal in February 2023 quashed the original sentence as an error in principle and re-sentenced Welby to a six-year headline term with two years discounted, 18 months suspended, leaving two-and-a-half years to serve with a four-year driving ban.
