Robert Traynor, a 54-year-old man from southwest Dublin and former computer worker at a bank, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of 1,938 images and 183 videos of child sexual abuse and admitted producing 1,650 computer-generated images on 22 September 2014. In March 2021, Judge Pauline Codd handed down a two-and-a-half-year term suspended in its entirety, noting he had undergone counselling and was deemed at low risk of re-offending. The DPP appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, and on 11 November 2021 the Court of Appeal heard the case before reserving judgment. The Court of Appeal subsequently upheld the wholly suspended sentence.
