latest first- Garda detective given conditional discharge for Dublin bar assault Assault · Co. Dublin
Robert Hennessy, a Dublin-based garda detective, was convicted of assaulting Michael Finnegan, 40, a social care worker and abuse campaigner, after repeatedly punching him in the face at Café en Seine on Dawson Street, Dublin, on 11 December 2019. The case followed a Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission investigation, and Hennessy pleaded not guilty at a non-jury trial at Dublin District Court, where Judge John Hughes convicted him in November 2023. Sentencing was adjourned twice before Judge Hughes imposed a conditional discharge on 17 July 2024, requiring Hennessy to pay €5,000 to Finnegan by 1 October, not reoffend for three years, have no contact with the victim, and attend Probation Service appointments every six months.
