  • Three acquitted preachers sue Garda over Dundalk public order arrest Public order (threatening · Co. Louth

Three Northern men, Sean Tully (44) of Belfast, Robert Ervine (39) and Ryan Williamson (44) of Banbridge, were arrested on 21 September 2021 at Market Square, Dundalk, after allegedly using a public address system to preach and use homophobic language. They were charged with engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and failing to comply with a garda's direction. In June 2022, Judge Eirinn McKiernan at Dundalk District Court dismissed all charges, stating the preaching was not likely to cause a breach of the peace. In September 2022, the three men lodged a plenary summons in the High Court in Dublin seeking damages and declarations that their constitutional and ECHR rights were infringed.
