Robert Duffy, a Belfast native, was convicted in 1996 in Northern Ireland of the murder of John Gibson, who was shot dead in the driveway of his Belfast home in October 1993. Duffy was released on license in July 2000 under the Belfast Agreement. On March 10, 2007, Duffy attempted to murder Colin O'Neill by firing a shotgun into his face at point-blank range at the Emerald Bar in Dundalk, County Louth. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008. In July 2024, the High Court formally ordered Duffy's surrender to UK authorities after Northern Irish authorities alleged he breached the terms of his early release.
