Gardaí stopped a car travelling southbound on the M8 at Glanmire, Co Cork, at approximately 7.30pm on 18 December 2024 and found 12kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of €840,000 hidden in a secret compartment. The driver, Rihards Maceks, a 31-year-old Latvian national with an address in Tipperary town, was arrested at the scene and detained under the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. He was charged with possession of controlled drugs and possession for sale or supply, and made no reply to the charges after caution. Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail at Cork District Court on 20 December 2024 and remanded him in custody to reappear on 27 December.
