On 14 August 2021, two men broke into a house in the Claddagh area, Galway City, where one defecated on the sitting room floor before stealing blankets, cushions, a curtain, Edam cheese and beetroot. The woman in her 60s was woken by a light being switched on and saw a man in the doorway. Gardaí caught both men on the steps of the Claddagh church eating the stolen food. Richard O'Brien, 48, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three and a half years' jail with the final 18 months suspended at Galway Circuit Criminal Court in July 2022. A bench warrant was issued for his accomplice Martin Ward, 44, after he failed to appear for sentence.
