Richard McDermott, a 42-year-old man of no fixed abode described in reports as an Ennis man, defecated on the floor of St Peter and Paul Cathedral on O'Connell Street in Ennis on 12 November 2025 at about 5.30pm. He was arrested after gardaí were called about intoxicated men hassling Mass-goers, and he later urinated in a cell at Ennis Garda Station, which made the cell inoperable. He pleaded guilty at Ennis District Court to criminal damage of the cathedral and of the cell, with reports giving 27 November or 1 December 2025 as the plea date, and was remanded in custody for a probation report. On 22 December 2025 Judge Alec Gabbett jailed him for six months in total, made up of three months for the cathedral, a consecutive one month for the cell and a consecutive two months for public order offences.
