Richard Coogan, a 42-year-old man and a Newbridge resident, was stopped by gardaí at the Applegreen service station on the Moorefield Road in Newbridge, Co Kildare, on 9 October 2022 and was found with €1,108 in cash, which a garda detective said was the proceeds of selling crack cocaine and heroin. Coogan had initially gone into custody in February and was due for release the following week, and on Thursday 7 December 2023 he admitted the offences at Naas District Court. Judge Desmond Zaidan applied the Probation Act and directed that the forfeited cash go to the Dara Project, a drug addiction and counselling service in Athy.
