latest first- Man sentenced for manslaughter in Killygordon, Donegal Manslaughter · Co. Donegal
Jasmine McMonagle, 28, a mother of two, was found dead in a pool of blood in the kitchen of her home at Forest Park, Killygordon, County Donegal, in the early hours of 4 January 2019. Her partner Richard Burke, 32, a man from Killygordon, was arrested at the scene after a three-hour standoff during which he confronted gardaí with a meat cleaver. He was charged with murder, pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter, and in March 2023 a jury at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Monaghan found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. In May 2023, Mr Justice Paul Burns sentenced Burke to 15 years with the final year suspended for five years, with five years of post-release supervision and psychiatric care. In June 2025, the victim's family described Burke's release date of as soon as July 2029 as a sickening insult.
