On 6 May 2026, gardaí stopped a car driven by Renato De Sousa (45), a Brazilian man with an address at Clonanny House, Portarlington, after an ANPR alert, at Bracklone Street, Portarlington, County Laois. He was arrested and charged with driving without a licence and without insurance, and released on cash bail. When the case was first called at Portlaoise District Court, a different man stood up, so a bench warrant was issued for De Sousa, but it was cancelled when he appeared later the same day, and his solicitor said he was pleading guilty. The court report published 7 June 2026 says he was fined €200 for having no insurance, was not disqualified from driving, and his bail was estreated with the cash to go towards the fine; he intends to return to Brazil.
