    Edward O'Sullivan, a 46-year-old father of five, was killed in the early hours of 6 February 2020 at his apartment on High Hayes Terrace, Kilkenny, after Garrett Smith, a 35-year-old man, stamped on his head during a violent altercation. Smith was arrested near the scene with blood on his clothing and footwear, and in October 2022 a jury at the Central Criminal Court found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and violent disorder. He was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison in December 2022. The Court of Appeal rejected his attempt to reduce the sentence in July 2024, and the Supreme Court refused leave to appeal in December 2024.
