On 17 June 2023, gardaí allegedly found Rebecca Gaughran, a woman aged 33 or 34 (reports differ) from Drogheda, Co Louth, in the search area of Portlaoise Prison, Co Laois, at about 3.20pm with €3,640 of diamorphine and 80 benzodiazepine tablets, worth around €4,000 in total. She was charged with bringing the drugs into the prison, and at her first court appearance in January 2024 Judge Cephas Power adjourned the matter to Portlaoise District Court on June 10 for DPP directions. She later admitted the offence at Portlaoise District Court, having made admissions to gardaí when interviewed. In February 2025 Judge Fay imposed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for a year.
