Raymond Shorten, a 50-year-old taxi driver, was convicted in May 2024 of two counts of rape and one of sexual assault of a girl who was seven or eight at the time. The offences took place in 2012 in Dublin, the first rape occurring in a bathroom at the girl's family home days after her mother's funeral and the second in a family member's bedroom. The abuse came to light in 2020 when the girl left a handwritten note on her grandmother's pillow, leading to a Garda investigation in early 2021. Shorten denied the allegations throughout, but a jury at the Central Criminal Court found him guilty in May. On 22 July 2024, Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo sentenced him to an effective 13 years, backdated to 22 August 2022 when he went into custody.
