Ann Walsh, 23, was strangled by her former boyfriend Raymond Donovan, 44, in the grounds of St Senan's church in Kilrush, Co. Clare, on 24 August 2005. Donovan was arrested at the scene and, after confessing but remaining defiant, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in Ennis and sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment by Mr Justice Paul Carney in June 2006. In January 2026, the High Court dismissed Donovan's habeas corpus application in which he claimed the Court of Criminal Appeal had substituted his life sentence for a 20-year term in 2009.
