On March 17, 2024, a man crashed into a mini steam engine at a St Patrick's Day parade on Main Street in Stradbally, Laois, injuring a child and a woman. The suspect is Raymond Barrett, a man aged 59 or 60 according to differing reports, of Luggacurran, Portlaoise. He appeared before Portlaoise District Court in September 2024 accused of dangerous driving, and was convicted in his absence on January 2, 2025 of two counts of dangerous driving, having no tax or driving licence, and threatening or abusive behaviour. A bench warrant was issued after he failed to appear for sentencing on January 14, 2025, and he was subsequently sentenced to a fine of €100 for dangerous driving, a further €100 for threatening behaviour, and a four-year driving disqualification.
