latest first- Man sentenced to 2.5 years for assaulting garda in Sligo Assault · Co. Sligo
On 15 May 2021, Garda Ray Wims responded to a burglary call in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, and pursued a man on foot who ran into a house where a woman and two children were inside. After a 25-minute struggle, Wims arrested 30-year-old Ciaran Flood, during which Flood punched, elbowed, bit and spat at the garda, causing serious back injuries and broken skin on his thumb. Flood was arrested, questioned and released, with a file sent to the DPP. In June 2023, Flood pleaded guilty at Sligo Circuit Court to assault causing harm and criminal damage to a garden gate, and was sentenced to two years and six months in jail plus a €10,000 donation to the Garda Benevolent Trust Fund.
