Two women with Spanish and Iraqi citizenship, Hala Salman Alaabsali (39) and Raghad Salaman Alaabsali (29), of Drumcondra Road Upper, Dublin 9, used valid Iraqi documents to claim direct provision payments of about €38 weekly plus accommodation and meals between August 2017 and November 2019, to which they were not entitled as EU citizens. The total payments claimed were just over €10,000. Both pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to making false statements for the purpose of obtaining direct provision payments. Judge Martin Nolan sentenced each to a 16-month suspended sentence on 8 February 2023, noting the case was unusual and that the women had repaid the monies to the State.
