On 25 March 2017, Czech man Jiri Kocurek, 45, was assaulted at a barbecue in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, by Polish man Piotr Swidniak. Kocurek suffered multiple fractures to his face, including his nose, around his eyes and jaw, after being kicked, reportedly while Swidniak was wearing steel-capped boots. Judgment was previously granted in default of appearance, and the case came before the High Court in October 2023 solely for assessing damages. Ms Justice Carmel Stewart awarded Kocurek €167,000, including €20,000 towards replacing eight teeth. Swidniak told the court he would not be able to pay because of his financial situation.
