On the morning of 12 September 2025, an 80-year-old cyclist, Edward (Ned) McLoughlin, from Trim, was found unresponsive after a collision with a vehicle on the R156 at Batterstown, Ballivor, Co Meath, and was pronounced dead at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown. A 42-year-old Polish man, Piotr Broniarczyk, was arrested on 17 September 2025 at Dublin Airport as he disembarked from a flight from Poland. He was charged with three hit-and-run offences: failing to remain at the scene, failing to report the incident, and failing to give assistance. He appeared before Judge Éirinn McKiernan at Trim District Court on 18 September 2025, made no reply, and was remanded in custody with consent to bail, with a next appearance set for 23 September 2025 for DPP directions.
