Michael Hayes, a 71-year-old man and retired Defence Forces member, was found with critical head injuries outside his home at St Michael's Court, Watergate, Limerick City, in the early hours of 11 July 2025 after being punched and beaten with a vodka bottle wrapped in a bag. Philip Ambrose, a 43-year-old man of no fixed abode, was arrested the same morning and charged with murder at a special sitting of Limerick District Court on 12 July 2025. Ambrose was remanded in custody, underwent a psychiatric evaluation, and was refused bail in the High Court over the following months. On 22 October 2026, he appeared before the Central Criminal Court in Limerick where he pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter, and was remanded in continuing custody pending sentencing.
