On 11 June 2026, gardaí responded at about 9.50pm to reports of an intoxicated male at a retail premises in Liberty Square, Thurles, Co Tipperary. Peter Tobin, 66, of no fixed abode, was arrested under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, taken to Thurles Garda Station and charged with public order offences. He appeared before Nenagh District Court, where the State opposed bail and his solicitor said he was not seeking it, and he was remanded in custody to Thurles District Court on 16 June and Cashel District Court on 19 June. The latest reported step is that remand to Cashel District Court on 19 June.

Peter Tobin, 62, a man from Thurles, was extremely drunk in the middle of Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on 13 January 2022 and became abusive to Sgt JJ Kirby, a woman, who was walking her dog. He was charged with intoxication and engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. Tobin appeared via video link from Limerick prison, where he is serving a sentence, and said it was his first time in Portlaoise and that he had missed a train. He was sentenced to two months in Limerick prison, with Judge Staines describing the language as an appalling way to speak to anybody.
