  On 17 June 2023, Peter Sheeran, a 33-year-old man from Kilcoole, County Wicklow, took €1,000 from the till of Murphy's Gala store in the village of Kilanerin on the Wicklow/Wexford border while armed with a knife. Passers-by detained him close to the scene shortly afterwards. He pleaded guilty to robbery at Wexford Circuit Court in December 2023, and Judge Cormac Quinn imposed a five-year sentence with the final year suspended. The Court of Appeal later quashed that sentence as disproportionate and excessive, as reported on 5 November 2024, and Sheeran remains in Castlerea prison pending re-sentencing on Monday 16 December.
