Peter Murphy was found dead at a rented property at Shanavoher near Mallow on 7 February 2015, having died from serious blunt force injuries. Gardaí interviewed more than 200 witnesses and reviewed extensive CCTV footage as part of the investigation. In 2019, two men were arrested in Mallow in connection with the murder but were released without charge. In February 2025, Gardaí issued a fresh appeal for information as the case remains unsolved after ten years.

Two masked men robbed Boylesports bookmakers on Earl Street, Longford, on 3 March 2024, using incapacitant spray to steal €237 from a till. Desmond McKeever, 46, and Peter Murphy, 42, were arrested on 10 March 2024 and charged with the robbery. Both men pleaded guilty at Longford Circuit Court. On 31 January 2025, Murphy was sentenced to four years and 10 months with the final 16 months suspended, and McKeever to three years and four months with the final year suspended.
