Peter Morrissey, a 61-year-old man and part-time gardener, was stopped on Gort Road in Ennis, County Clare, on 26 July 2026 while riding an e-scooter, where he stumbled off the vehicle and his speech was slurred. A breath test at Ennis Garda Station returned 76mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, three times the 22mg legal limit for motorists. Morrissey pleaded guilty at Ennis District Court to driving a powered personal transporter while under the influence of an intoxicant. Judge Adrian Harris imposed a €500 fine with nine months to pay. Morrissey had previously received a three-year driving ban in May 2023 for drink driving, which his solicitor said was why the e-scooter was his only form of transport.
