In the early hours of 10 September 2023, Vincent (Jimmy) Connolly, a 28-year-old man from Cedar Hill, Westport, struck a single punch to the face of Peter McDermott, a 60-year-old man from Murrisk, Westport, outside The Clock Tavern on Hill Street, Westport, Co Mayo. McDermott had lunged towards Connolly and knocked him to the ground before Connolly returned with the punch, and McDermott fell backwards, sustaining a traumatic brain injury from which he died the afternoon of 11 September 2023. The two men did not know each other and had both been drinking heavily. Connolly was tried at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court, where the defence argued self-defence and the prosecution maintained it was an unlawful assault. On 22 July 2025, a jury unanimously found Connolly not guilty of manslaughter.

Peter McDermott, a man in his 60s from Co Leitrim, was seriously injured in an altercation on High Street in Westport, Co Mayo, at around 1.20am on Saturday 9 September 2023. He was taken to Mayo University Hospital, where he died on the evening of Sunday 10 September 2023; the Irish Times reported the death as Sunday afternoon. A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene and later released without charge. Gardaí renewed their witness appeal on 15 September 2023, and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
