Peter Keaney, 55, of Monksland, Athlone, attacked an 85-year-old woman (reports differ: 84) at Sonas Nursing Home in Athlone on 29 April 2024, shortly before 8pm. The victim, Keaney's partner's mother, was hit in the face, punched onto a chair, had a pillow held over her face, and was kicked in the head after slipping to the ground. Keaney was arrested at the scene, charged with assault causing harm and attempted suffocation, appeared at Athlone District Court on 1 May 2024, and pleaded guilty at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court on 21 November 2024. He was sentenced on 6 December 2024 to four and a half years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended on condition he did not reoffend for six years.
