On 30 April 2018, Peter Guerin (65), of Croom, County Limerick, approached a woman with a mild intellectual disability, considered a protected person, at the bus station in Limerick city after she had travelled there from sheltered accommodation. He was charged with engaging in a sexual act with a protected person and pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court. Mr Justice Tony Hunt set a headline sentence of five years and imposed a two-and-a-half-year prison term with the final six months suspended on conditions, although one report described it as a two-year jail term. The sentence was reported on 15 January 2024, the latest development.
