Truck driver Peter Burns (50) was involved in a collision on 23 July 2020 near Heuston Station in Dublin city centre that left a female cyclist, who was on her way to work, with multiple fractures and crush-type injuries. Gardaí accepted that Burns did not adequately check his mirrors before moving off after a traffic light turned green, and he pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to careless driving causing serious injury. The cyclist has since undergone at least six surgeries and remains in rehabilitation. On 12 March 2025, Judge Martin Nolan imposed an eight-month sentence suspended in full with no driving disqualification, and a victim impact statement was handed in but not read out.
