    Paul O'Carroll, a 45-year-old man, pleaded guilty to possessing 3,910 images and 376 movie files of child sexual abuse at his home in Knocklyon, Dublin, found during a search on 4 August 2017. The investigation began when the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the US flagged a Facebook account linked to child abuse material, and gardaí traced the IP address to O'Carroll's address. The files were not analysed until March 2020 due to pandemic and technical delays. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 29 March 2023, Judge Martin Nolan sentenced O'Carroll to three years but suspended it in full, citing his lack of previous convictions, cooperation, and good insight into his wrongdoing.
