Paul Moody, 46, a former garda who served 21 years, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in May 2026 to a six-year term with 15 months suspended for harassment and coercive control of his then-partner, an unnamed woman, between March 2016 and November 2017. Moody sent her over 2,200 messages, paced with a knife, and threatened to send intimate images to her employer and former husband. The first victim complained to GSOC in 2017, but the investigation was discontinued with no outcome; Moody was later jailed in 2022 for three years and three months for coercion against his second victim, Nicola Hanney. Fiosrú head Emily Logan said the first investigation was conducted in an unacceptable manner and that a proper inquiry could have stopped the abuse earlier.

Paul Moody, 46, a former garda from Celbridge, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to harassment and coercive control offences against his then-partner, the mother of his child, between March 2016 and November 2017. He sent her 2,261 violent and threatening messages over six days in March 2016, set up false email accounts, sent intimate images to her workplace, and used his role as a garda to intimidate her. The woman complained to GSOC in December 2017, but the ombudsman investigation faced delays and was discontinued in March 2023. Moody was arrested in October 2023 and charged in July 2024. In May 2026, Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to six years with the final 15 months suspended, following a 2022 conviction for coercive control of Nicola Hanney for which he served three years and three months.

Paul Moody, a 42-year-old man from Celbridge, Co Kildare, was sentenced to three years and three months in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 26 July 2022 for coercive control of his former partner Nicola Hanney, a 44-year-old woman with terminal cancer. The couple met online in 2017, and over a four-year period Moody sent over 30,000 threatening and abusive messages, assaulted her, stole her cancer medication, and used his position as a garda to obtain confidential information about her. The case came to light when Moody handed in his phone to gardaí while making a complaint about one of Hanney's relatives. Moody pleaded guilty to one charge of coercive control covering January 2019 to November 2020, with 19 further counts taken into account, and was suspended from duty in March 2021 before resigning from An Garda Síochána. In December 2023, Hanney appeared in an RTÉ documentary in which she abandoned her anonymity to tell her story.
