Thomas Caulfield, a 77-year-old Christian Brother, indecently assaulted Paul Grealish when Grealish was nine and 10 years old in front of his classmates at St Patrick's Christian Brothers School, Tuam, in the early 1970s. Grealish initially pursued a civil action in 2005 before filing a criminal complaint in 2013 after receiving an HSE letter referencing the vetting of Caulfield for a teaching position.
