Paul Earley, a 60-year-old man, headbutted 55-year-old Thomas Maher in an unprovoked assault outside Clarke's Bar on Patrick Street, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, in the early hours of 7 January 2024. Maher, a grandfather and married father of five, suffered multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds and is now bedridden in a high-support care facility. Earley was arrested the following day, a second man was released without charge, and Earley pleaded guilty to intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court in November 2024. He was sentenced to seven years in jail in April 2025, with the headline sentence of nine years and six months reduced due to mitigating factors.
